The Bernese Mountain Dog was not known outside of Switzerland until quite recently and has now taken on a role as a family pet. It bears an unmistakable resemblance to the St. Bernard dog, in size and general outline. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a strong and agile dog with a broad head, dark brown eyes, and ears carried close to the head. The coat is profuse, close, soft, and fairly black with smaller tan markings on its face and legs. It has a white blaze on its head and a white shirt front.
The height at the shoulder is 26 to 29 inches for dogs; 24 to 27 inches for bitches.
